Thursday 19 January 2006: Whilst looking for a picture of the original steering box for the steering upgrade write up I was struck by how clean and "nice" the POP looked.  Being between major projects this seemed an idea time to strip POP for an overhaul and re-spray.

It places the paint has become tatty practically in areas in areas of modification.  Originally I used ordinary gloss paint of the cylinder and this has darken considerably due to heat.  I will take the opportunity to replace this with high heat black gloss.

The first task was to strip back to the chassis.  To avoid a nightmare jigsaw when it came reassembly I bagged and labeled each part's fittings as they were removed.  Removal of the crank was simplified since I did not originally use Loctite as directed but cut keyways instead.

For some time the rear drive chains have be too slack and I took the opportunity to adjusts to position of the back axle to correct this.

In only three hours I was down to the chassis.  There being no benefit in dismantling this I set about cleaning it ready for the re-spray.  I was very grubby there being a mixture of grass, dirt and oil.  In the end I resorted to an old tooth brush and hot detergent.  After cleaning the chassis was looking a lot better, even so, I pressed on masking and degreasing ready for spraying.  I took the opportunity  to adjust the position of the back axle to remove slackness in the drive chains.

Wednesday 1 February: I have been steadily cleaning and painting the removed components.  I originally painted the cylinder blue but as this has faded with the heat I decided to replace it with high heat gloss black.

I made the mistake of refitting the crankshaft before refitting the boiler. This meant that I had to fit the boiler from below by dropping the chassis over it.  While this was easy fitting the bottom boiler support bracket was very fiddly.

I attended to excessive wear in the little ends pins and hope this will make the engine run more sweetly.  The cylinder bores and pistons were in excellent condition and this is in sharp contrast  to what I found before fitting cast iron piston rings.

Friday 3 February: Today I achieved an important milestone when I was able to run the engine on air.   I was rewarded with a nice sooth tick-over.
