Boconnoc was an enjoyable rally and given events elsewhere in the country we had excellent weather though in places the ground was a bit soft. One of the delights of this rally is that the engines are able to move about and my favourite jaunt was the trip down to the lake and back. The interesting feature of this trip is that it involves descending and then ascending a steep hill. According to my map the hill was 1 in 12 though at the time it felt steeper. I have included a video of part of the ascent as with the engine working hard the bark of the Burrell can be heard. Make sure you play the video with decent speakers with a good bass response. Play Video - Picture is boring but the sound is great! There were three ModelWorks Burrell at Boconnoc this year with Steve, Buzz and myself in attendance. On our first trip down to the lake Buzz suffered a disaster losing 3 of his rear tyres.
There seems to be a spate of tyre shedding and in all cases I have seen there is a clean break between the Isoflex and the rubber tyre. In most case the tyre was lost when running on tarmac so I assume avoiding tight turns on tarmac will prolong tyre life. Isoflex sticks fine to the metal but fails to grip the rubber tyre. I suspect that some form of silicon release agent was used when the tyre was moulded and residues of this have prevented the Isoflex bonding to the tyre. My inclination would be to use some form of power tool (eg wire brush, belt sander etc) to remove the surface layer. While the ModelWorks instructions warn that over enthusiastic use of power tools will melt the rubber I have heard of nobody suffering from this problem but I have heard of plenty of shed tyres. When I replaced my shed tyre I also cut slots using a burr in a mini drill - time will tell if it works.
