Kit 24 - Governor

ModelWorks 4 inch Scale Burrell Agricultural Traction Engine
Kit 24 arrived 4th November 2004
This kit was delivered out of sequence because of boiler delays

The contents of kit 24.

Thursday:  When I went to City Link I was presented with a very small package.  I suppose I shouldn't complain - the boiler when it arrives will more than make up.

The kit has a lot of brass parts and it would be tempting to polish them.  Looking through my picture collection I notice that most of the governor is usually painted black with perhaps some red.

The Governor of full size Burrell Compound BW6030

The Cyliner Name Plate on "Jack" TD264I noticed in the picture above that the cylinder name plate is not painted, strange I though as on many model it is painted.  On a scan through my full size pictures I found it hard to find an example where it is painted.  Here is another example this time from 5nhp Burrell "JACK" TD264 which is very similar to the the plate supplied by ModelWorks.  Modelworks have numbered our engine 1856. The ModelWorks supplied name plate I cannot find this number in the traction engine register (ie not in perseveration in UK) but I can see that the number dates from around 1895. Does anyone know anything  of Burrell 1856?

Saturday: Yesterday I was surprised to receive a jiffy bag.  Inside there was a a plastic bag marked BU42426 but no paper work.  I conclude that had I checked the contents of kit 24 I would have discovered that BU42426 was missing.  This prompted me to carefully check the contents.  I discovered an anomaly in that the fastener for the governor worm wheel is listed as 2 off m3 x 6 socket grub.  One was packed with the wheel and the other was in a bag with the other grubs.  To cap it all, the wheel only needs one grub!

I decided to dry assemble the whole governor.  This was relatively straight forward through I did encounter one or two minor snags.  The grub screws for the Horizontal bevel (BU42402) are a bit long and foul the governor base casting.  I have not decided whether I will shorten the grubs, file the casting or "dimple" the shaft.  I will do what ever takes my fancy on final assembly.  I found that when I screwed in the oiler it locked the pulley shaft. The threaded portion of the oiler screw is too long and needs to be shortened.  A simple job for the lathe though I am sure the excess could be removed with a file.  Finally the instructions call for two grub screws in the pulley while the parts list only list one.

I will disassemble the governor ready for painting - Some of the brass will be black!

Sunday: Now that it is time to start painting the list of brass parts to be painted has shrunk! The brass parts I will be painting are the governor base, balls and top.

Sunday one week on: I have now primed and painted the governor parts and am waiting for the paint to set nice and hard.   I shall have to be careful that  I do not scratch the paint when it comes to fit the lower ring since it has to be pushed up over the springs.

Wednesday 24th: I finally assembled the painted governor today. I found that the bevel gear on the pulley shaft was to far away from the other to run smoothly. Following a tip from Dave I inserted a washer between the gear and the governor casing.

I was unable to shift "Chucking" marks on the gland, main shaft & worm gear and will have to live with them.  It is most annoying on the worm gear as the profile of the worm has be spoilt causing it to grate on the gear.

Now that it is finished I am not sure I called the painting correctly   I will see what I think in a few months and may strip what I don't like.
